Iowa Supreme Court Unanimously Permits Gay "Marriage"
Iowa has joined Massachusetts and Connecticut in legally permitting gay "marriage" after a lawsuit was filed by "Lambda Legal, a New York-based gay rights organization" and the Iowa Supreme Court determined that the law defining marriage as being between one man and one woman was unconstitutional.
As this is breaking news, there's no word yet on whether Iowa will attempt to pass a constitutional amendment, but I think it's a pretty safe bet. Societally, this ruling is on a par with December's decision permitting assisted suicide in Montana.
Gay "marriage" and assisted suicide bills are on the legislative agendas of several states across the nation (gay "marriage" in New York, New Jersey, and Vermont, and assisted suicide in Hawaii and New Hampshire). I could go on about the very fabric of our culture unraveling, but it's just too depressing.
Hm. I was studying the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church yesterday, and my favorite line comes from the conclusion: we must be "immersed in God and inserted into society" (small misquote possible; it's not in front of me). I think I've said this before: We're all called to holiness, but it just may be that God isn't calling us to be holy within a holy society. Or, if I may attempt to quote Bl. Teresa of Calcutta, "God doesn't call me to be successful; he calls me to be faithful." Let's try for vigorous and loving opposition to these transformations to society, all while pushing for the transformations our nation and world actually need.
